Kumihimo Braiding

Some time last year, I was looking for some beads in Hobbycraft, and spotted a Kumihimo braiding disc. I had no idea what Kumihimo braiding was, but I was intrigued, so I got it and, courtesy of the internet, found out how to use it. I was amazed at how easy it is to get a patterned, neat and regular cord using it, so I suggested it as a session for the group. This is what people came up with mainly using scraps of yarn they had to hand, although I used a mixture of crochet and perle cotton.

Obviously, I cheated here! I did those pieces as examples before our meeting. I've added jewellery findings, beads and even some shrink plastic. I think these cords would be ideal for many projects - this was more a session about learning a technique than completing a project.

If you want to have a go, the disc I used was like this one, but you can use a disc of heavy card with slits cut round its edge (which is what most group members did), although those are pretty much single-use, while the foam one will keep its shape for some time.

Felt Lavender Bag Houses

Shilpa lead this meeting, and we all had a lovely time choosing colours, cutting and sewing. We were all pleased with the results. It's always great to see that, despite coming from the same idea, they're all different!
